Thoughts on Finding Yourself on Shark Tank
On January 6, 2017, our business made an appearance on an episode of ABC’s Shark Tank. And let me tell you, it was surreal deluxe. Of course, this appearance marks a real highlight for the business of journey, of which there have been many. But this was TV! Who knew it would be so surreal…
We thought it would be a great idea to share some of our thoughts with you on our recent Shark Tank experience. So with that in mind, here are a few of the things that have run through our minds, including some of our best memories (so far). These appear below in no particular order of priority or importance, and we’ve framed them in sort of a self-interview style.
What is one very clear standout memory of the show for you?
Watching Robert and Lori hold our dearest Chestnut (one of our kitties) was one of the most amazing parts of the experience. Was it that our cat was famous? Was it that something so domestic about your life — normally watching your cat walking around your home — was now made public? Whatever the case, seeing your beloved kitty up there on television with you, helping to make one of your dreams a reality was magic.
How did it all begin? What happened when you found out you’d be on Shark Tank?
We were literally dumbfounded and speechless when we found out we’d be on the show.
In hindsight, were you 100% pleased with your appearance? Everyone has different goals for getting in front of the Sharks. Do you feel like it was a success?
I think we could have done a better job talking about SHRU and why it’s so important for feline mental health; but the sharks were throwing 5 questions to us, all at the same time! It’s like playing fastball. You just don’t get to talk about every single thing you know you should, before it’s all over!
You brought your cat Chestnut on to the set as part of your pitch. How did she perform?
All in all, she was amazing. But as an aside, Chestnut went running off camera to get frisky with a camera man in the middle of our pitch. We’re not mad at her!
What was it like being on the set of Shark Tank?
We were so honored to be selected from all of the amazing companies that applied to the show; we also filmed the day after Shark Tank won their 2015 Emmy, so the energy in the room among producers, directors, etc. was palpable. People in television work really hard to make what we see every night from our living room couch. Everyone on the set was fun, positive, and very organized to work with. It was a true ‘Hollywood’ experience for us two non-Hollywood cat people.
Shark Tank Is Over. Were We Really Just on Television?
Walking down the hallway to meet the Sharks was truly surreal; it felt like we were watching the show while we were in the show. Call it a Charlie Kaufman moment, with cats.
Who were you hoping to get deal with, if anyone?
We were hoping to get a deal with Daymond, Lori, or Robert. This was mostly because Daymond and Lori both have the retail experience we were looking to benefit from. We also just love Robert’s approach to business, and his background of “coming from nothing” and making a business of his own aligns with our own experience.
In the end, were you sad or happy with the results of Shark Tank? Did it seem like they fully get the opportunities in the pet space?
We were a little disappointed the Sharks didn’t make us an offer; it was clear to us that they simply don’t yet understand the size of the cat market. They’ve invested in several dog product companies over the years, so I know they’re starting to “get” that pets are becoming important family members, but the cat industry still seems to elude them.
We’re working hard to fight for cat representation in your pet aisle! Keep hope!
